Sheikh Mohamed Ali Atafay, a jury member of the 62nd International Quran Recitation and Memorisation Assembly (MTHQA), made the remarks on Sunday in an interview with a Malaysian outlet.

He said Muslims in the country can study the 'manhaj' or methodology to memorise the Quran adopted by other Muslim countries to improve their mastery of the knowledge.

Sheikh Mohamed Ali said he was impressed with the fact that the knowledge of memorising the Quran is so close to the hearts of Muslims in the country which has been inculcated in them from a young age.

He said he was also pleased that Muslims in the country are aware that he is in Malaysia to be on the jury for MTHQA, an occurrence that he has rarely experienced in other countries.

Sheikh Mohamed Ali who is from Morocco said a total of 36 reciters from around the world have been selected to participate in the 62nd MTHQA.

According to him, reciters are judged based on their mastery of tajwid (Quran recitation pronunciation rules), fluency in reciting verses, maqamat or taranum (the art of recitation or voice) as well as the melodious tone of the reciter's voice.

Syeikh Mohamed Ali said he hoped that Malaysia will continue hosting the programme to produce more hufaz (Quran memorisers) in the future.

Meanwhile, Dr Maria Ulfa, who is the first female jury for MTHQA applauded Malaysia's openness in selecting the jury, saying that the involvement of two female members, including the Malaysian Islamic Development Department (Jakim) director-general Datuk Hakimah Mohd Yusoff, showed that the country practises gender equality which should be emulated.

"In the past, although there were many female reciters, there was no female jury. This proves that Malaysia has moved forward as a country," said Maria who won the MTHQA in 1980.

MTHQA 2022 will be concluded tomorrow and the public is invited to witness the event by being present at the Plenary Hall, KLCC or watching it live via RTM's TV1 and Jakim's social media platform
